(BIOL) Environmental Health and Disease in Spain

3 Credits | 300 Level | 45 Contact hours

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND COURSE MATERIALS

All materials, including excerpts from Casaret & Doull’s Essentials of Toxicology, Curtis Klaassen and John Watkins III, and scientific papers and reviews, will be available at the program site to all students.

DESCRIPTION

This course will explore how naturally occurring and anthropogenic chemicals lead to pathology and disease in humans. Concepts that will be covered include the dose-response relationships of toxicants, the metabolism and action of toxicants, and the diseases associated with environmental toxicants in different organ systems. Students will use case studies and laboratory techniques to understand how chemicals from Spain’s environment can lead to disease in humans. Significant environmental health issues facing Spain, such as water and air pollution will be discussed. Students will quantify bacterial concentrations from contaminated waterway and identify methods to measure levels of particulate matter from the air.

LEARNING GOALS

• Understand the basic principles of toxicology that generate the undesirable effects of therapeutic, occupational, and environmental chemicals on human health
• Demonstrate an understanding of the role of important organs in the human body that determine the toxicological responses, which lead to organ damage and disease.
• Develop hypotheses about how certain compounds cause organ damage and disease through literature research.
• Read, understand, and explain primary research articles.
