(PHYS) Elements of Material Science

3 Credits | 200 Level | 45 Contact hours

REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS AND COURSE MATERIALS

Fundamentals of Materials Science and Engineering; an Integrated Approach. W.D. Callister and D.G. Rethwisch, 10th Edition, Wiley, New York, 2018.

DESCRIPTION

Describing the conceptual internal structure of materials, its evolution into the real model of microstructure, for understanding the dependence of properties upon these structures. Connecting properties to the behavior of materials in service and materials selection.

LEARNING GOALS

• Explain the fundamental relationships between structure, processing, and performance of engineering materials and the basic science behind their widely differing properties.
• Describe basic materials properties of interest to material scientists and engineers.
• Predict basic microstructural development that evolves during the processing of materials and its potential impact on structure and properties.
• Utilize material properties to guide basic material selection.
