ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System)
A regular semester's workload consists of 30 ECTS. ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits measure the workload of a fulltime student during one academic year. The European Credits Transfer System measures the total time that is required to take a subject: theoretical and practical classes, study, projects, etc. In addition, each ECTS credit is equivalent to 10 contact hours and 25 self study hours. Students are advised to take a minimum of 48 credits per year or 24 credits per semester with a maximum of 60 credits per year or 30 credits per semester.
The European Commission has published an ECTS User's Guide, which can be found at:
The Spanish system has been adapted to the European Space for Higher Education (ESHE). Graduate, Official Master's and Ph.D. degrees has been gradually replace the former structure.
Bachelor courses are meant to prepare students for professional activity. Study plans for Bachelor degrees include 240 credits, distributed over four years. At the end, a Bachelor's final project is produced and submitted, with a credit load of between 6 and 30 credits.
University Master courses are meant to provide advanced professional training aimed at academic and professional specialisation and research.
Study plans for Master’s degrees include between 60 and 120 ECTS credits, distributed over one or two years. At the end, a Master’s final project is produced and publicly read, with a credit load of between 6 and 30 ECTS credits.
● Ph.D. degree
Ph.D. courses are meant to provide advanced training in research techniques.
Their duration is not established in credits. Rather, it is based on a Ph.D. programme, which comprises a training period and a research period (Ph.D. thesis).

COVID RULES
● As a reminder, these are the symptoms of COVID:
● Most common symptoms:
- fever
- cough
- tiredness
- loss of taste or smell ● Less common symptoms:
- sore throat
- headache
- aches and pains
- diarrhoea
- a rash on skin, or discoloration of fingers or toes
- red or irritated eyes ● Serious symptoms:
- difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- loss of speech or mobility, or confusion
- chest pain
Additionally, these are the current COVID Restrictions for the Comunidad Valenciana:
● Mandatory Mask Mandate (please remember that we strongly encourage everyone to wear a FFP2 Mask (the European equivalent to the N95 mask) in these circumstances):
- On public transportation including buses, metros, taxis, etc.
- In healthcare facilities including hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, etc.
- If you have tested positive for COVID-19, for 10 days following onset of symptoms
- If you have symptoms of COVID-10, for 10 days following onset of symptoms
Additionally, if you have come into contact with a person who tests positive for COVID or if you have any of the symptoms of COVID, we suggest that you take an antigen test. Antigen tests can be purchased in any pharmacy, and the price has been set by the government at EUR 2.94 per test. All students should have antigen tests at home, and if they are showing symptoms, they will need to test symptoms with enough time to see the result and, if negative, to attend class in a timely manner wearing a surgical or FFP2 mask as a precaution since sometimes before giving a positive result you can have several negatives.
● If the test is positive, please notify your Program. They will be able to explain the next steps to you.
● If the test is negative, you can continue as you would normally but, in case you have symptoms you need to wear a surgical or FFP2 mask. We still would strongly encourage you to monitor for symptoms and if you have any symptoms of COVID, to test yourself again as soon as possible.
For class, please remember that if the test is negative, any absences you may have had will be considered unexcused. As such, we strongly recommend that you buy a few COVID tests from the pharmacy in case you need them to test before your class. If your result is negative but you feel unwell and with COVID symptoms, you will need a medical note to justify your absences.
Please also keep in mind that there are farmacias de guardia, which are open 24 hours. To find your nearest farmacia de guardia, you can go to any pharmacy in the area and they are required to have the address of the nearest farmacia de guardia posted near the door of the pharmacy which will indicate where you can go to find an open pharmacy.
Lastly, here some steps you can do to reduce the risk of getting COVID:
- Maintain a safe distance from others (at least 1.5m or 5ft), even if they don't appear to be sick.
- Wear a FFP2 mask (N95) in public, especially indoors or when physical distancing is not possible.
- Choose open, well-ventilated spaces over closed ones. Open a window if indoors.
- Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Stay home if you feel unwell.
- If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, please let your Program know immediately.
Note: The classroom might change during the course.
Courses
Choosing your curriculum is the first step in your STUDY ABROAD planning. UPV offers students to choose from over 100 English-taught courses which can be combined from different disciplines
Useful tips when choosing the courses:
● Most of the courses from the same “GRADE” (Minor/Mayor) give the student specialized knowledge in the chosen field of study. Those courses within the grade usually never clash/overlap in the timetable. On those courses you will follow all of your courses with the same students, thereby increasing the chance of friendships.
● We recommend you to choose more courses than needed due to possible overlaps in the timetable. Please select them with an order of preference.
● When selecting courses, please note that you must meet the specified entry requirements.
